In 1974, Alamo began operations in four Florida locations with a fleet of 1,000 cars. The company grew conservatively during its early years, but by the mid- eighties was recognised as the leading rental company for the US, pioneering new concepts and utilising state of the art technology to speed up the rental process.
The company's ambitious expansion programme into Europe and the rest of the world commenced in 1988 with the opening of Alamo's International Operations. Locations were opened at London's Gatwick and Heathrow airports to mark this important step in the group's development.
On airport locations in Frankfurt, Munich and Brussels were opened in 1994 with continued expansion in the United Kingdom and the acquisition of a majority ownership in Autohansa, a German company.
In 1995 Alamo moved into Greece and Portugal and opened its first Canadian rental locations in Montreal and Vancouver.
Alamo's reach has continued to grow. The company now has more than 180,000 vehicles serving more than 15 million travellers annually in 293 locations in the U.S. and Canada as well as more than 955 locations in Europe, Latin America, Caribbean, South Africa and Australia.
