Utah is a popular holiday destination for its abundance of natural wonders, including five national parks and seven national monuments. Known as a centre for skiing and snowboarding in the winter and for mountain hiking in the summer, Utah is also home to the Sundance and River Rock film festivals, and there is plenty to see and do whether you are the rugged outdoor type or looking for a more relaxed and leisurely vacation!
Arriving in Utah at Salt Lake City International Airport, your first step should be to arrange hiring a car This can be done in advance with Alamo, where the online booking system makes picking up your vehicle quick and convenient. Salt Lake City itself has many attractions, including the Salt Lake Temple, the Mormon Tabernacle and the Olympic Park. And just a half hour's drive from the city is the Great Salt Lake itself, which offers spectacular views and, on the south side, bathing beaches and a recreation park.
Take Interstate 15 out of Salt Lake City and join I-70 at Selina to enjoy some incredible views, before switching to Route 191 and driving down to Moab, a journey that should take you roughly six hours. Moab is a great base to explore the surrounding national parks, particularly Arches National Park, home to 2,000 natural stone arches in a desert landscape high above the city. Continuing along the highway from Arches will take you to Canyonlands National Park, with the famous Island in the Sky that rivals the Grand Canyon in terms of spectacle.
Alternatively, continue straight down I-15 from Salt Lake City to the stunning Zion National Park. The 11 mile Zion-Mount Carmel Highway runs through the park, winding up Pine Creek Canyon before passing through the unlit, mile-long Zion Tunnel. Departing from the same junction, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive passes such landmark mountains as the Sentinel, the Three Patriarchs, the Mountain of the Sun, Red Arch Mountain, the Great White Throne and Angel's Landing, before arriving at the Temple of Sinawava. This impressive natural amphitheatre leads on via a trail to the scenic Zion Narrows gorge.
Whatever route you choose to take in exploring Utah, you will always be in safe hands with Alamo car hire. From the outstanding wilds of the national parks to the rugged beauty of the desert country, to the ski resorts of the Wasatch Mountains, Utah truly has something for everyone.
