How to Choose the Right Car Hire For Your Road Trip

Choosing the right rental car can help make a driving holiday extra special. Whatever your terrain or budget, Alamo Rent A Car has a vehicle for you.

Renting a car for your US road trip? From snowy adventures in Alaska to sun-drenched Florida drives, there’s a lot to consider when selecting your perfect rental car, so check out our guide on how to choose the right vehicle for your holiday.

Want the classic road trip experience? Go for a convertible

Driving down a wide road in an open-top car is an iconic image of freedom. So if it’s your first time renting a car in the US, you might consider spending a little more on a classic convertible – so long as you’re chasing the sun of course. One of our Ford Mustangs is an exciting option for up to four people, and will hold its own on most routes across the country.

If you’re hoping to rent a convertible for your trip, you may want to book early – this popular option is in high demand during busier months, particularly in locations such as Las Vegas or Los Angeles.

City skipping? Try a compact

If your road trip is going to be more urban than rural, then a smaller car may be the best option. Many larger cities in the US, including New York, have inner city parking spaces reserved for compact vehicles, and they’re generally easier for navigating on busier roads.

Take the whole family in comfort with a minivan

When you’re travelling in larger group there’s nothing more precious than a little extra space – especially on longer road trips. Luckily, our minivans offer plenty – from seven-seater people carriers to 15-passenger vans. We also have safety seat options for all ages, and the option to include a travel tablet to keep the kids amused on the journey.

The practical driver

For those who just want to get from A to B without the frills, one of our standard or economy vehicles is likely to be the cheapest option, while still providing all of the comfort needed for your trip. You can also add a navigational system as an optional extra at checkout to make your journey even smoother.

Leave the highway with a Jeep

The North American wilds are an exciting place to get away from it all – but you’ll need the right vehicle if you’re heading onto smaller roads. An SUV is the ideal option for the road less travelled, and you’ll always have plenty of luggage space for tents, cool boxes or sports equipment.

Four wheel drives are available, but cannot be guaranteed in advance. Please note though: you’re not allowed to take Alamo Rent A car vehicles onto unpaved roads.

Renting a car for unexpected weather conditions

All of our rental vehicles are equipped with all-weather tyres, so you don’t have to worry if you’re driving into different weather conditions. Snow chains cannot be attached to our vehicles.

If you’re going to be travelling in harsher or changeable conditions, it’s a good idea to bring extra fuel and opt for Roadside Plus at checkout. That way, if you get a flat tyre or run out of fuel, we’ll come to sort everything out for free.
