Known as the floating garden, the region offers breath taking scenery and the valleys and mountains are home to some of the world's most beautiful plant life, with an abundance of tropical fruits and exotic flowers. It's well advised to if you get the opportunity to check out the gigantic annual fireworks display on New Year's Eve.

The Azores region has become popular for activities such as whale watching due to the various types of cetaceans that live in the area. The area is a collection of nine small islands with rugged volcanic terrain, steep hillsides and beautiful vineyards. If relaxation is more your thing then check out the waters of the natural thermal springs.

The Centro region is steeped in history and traditional stone architecture and is most famous for the home place of some of Portugal most historic battles. Head to the city of Almeida where you can visit the impressive medieval fortress and where you can find one of Portugal's largest Geoparks.

Lisbon Region is one of only a few European capital cities that have a coastline making it one of the more popular regions for those who are after a beach holiday.Tourists flock to the Lisbon region to visit the Capital city and experience the amazing night life. If it's a little romance you after that the city of Sintra which is located in the region is perfect for a little get away for two where you can visit the secluded Adraga beach with its amazing clear blue water. You need to be careful though as it's quite a trek through the mountains but one that is well worth it.

The region of Alentejo offers one of the best opportunities to see the real Portuguese countryside. Alentejo is a magical region that still remains hugely undiscovered. You could get lost for hours in the rolling sunflower fields as everywhere seems unspoiled and untouched and there are numerous medieval whitewashed cottages and villages dotted around to explore.Surrounded by rural landscape, the region is also home to some of the region's best wine making facilities. It's extremely worthwhile to drive around and take in the beautiful landscapes, architecture and monuments and to experience the culture that's on offer.

A road trip around Portugal would not be complete without visiting the last region of Porto. Situated right on the mouth of the river Douro, the region is well known for producing port wine. While in the area take a drive across the Dom Luis I Bridge which connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia. The Bridge is a specular site that attracts many visitors every year.Whilst you're in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, you should check out the many famous port houses in the area.
