Route 66 lies at the heart of the legendary US road-trip; a 2,448-mile stretch of historic tarmac connecting the Midwest to the Pacific Ocean and providing the basis for an all-American rite of passage.
Celebrated in pop culture from Pixar's Cars, R&B standard (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66 and Karl Pilkington's An Idiot Abroad, the highway remains a metaphor for freedom and the true spirit of the American dream. Despite its decommission in 1985, thousands still make this iconic road trip every year with only a few tweaks to the original itinerary.
Pick up a car from Alamo in Chicago then head eastwards with the wind whistling through your hair. Drive leisurely and experience the diverse cities that line its route; places like St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, Flagstaff and Los Angeles. We have numerous locations across the region so you can pick-up and drop-off wherever it suits, giving you the freedom that a Route 66 road trip deserves.
Originally designed as a way to connect rural Midwest communities with larger cities in the 1920s, Route 66 later offered a migration route for farmers escaping devastating dust storms a decade later. After World War II, it began to attract the middle classes and their brand new automobiles. Today, it's a mixture of kitsch Americana and friendly nostalgia - old-style gas stations, diners, motels and travellers seeking their rebirth in Los Angeles.
Look out for the following points of interest along the way:
The Blue Whale (Catoosa, Oklahoma) is a smirking, 80ft mammal statue originally built as an anniversary gift but now enjoys the coveted Roadside Attraction status.
Petrified Forest National Park (Arizona) is a park of fossilised tree logs, over 225 million years old. Visit its archaeological sites and dig up a few dinosaur fossils.
Route 66 Mother Road Museum (Barstow, California) houses classic cars, vintage photography and auto-repair signs for the avid (and casual) collector.
The Wigwam Motel (San Bernardino, California) opened in 1949 and is undoubtedly the best collection of 30ft concrete tepee hotels in the area. Each unit has a barbeque grill and a kidney-shaped swimming pool.
Meteor crater (near Flagstaff, Arizona) is over 50,000 years old, 2.4 miles in circumference and 167 metres deep. You can't miss it!
Giganticus Headicus (Walapai, Arizona) is a 14ft, blue tiki head which loves having its photograph taken.
