Florida Airports

If you're coming into Florida by plane, then the airport you arrive at might determine what you're going to see and do. For example, flying into Orlando International Airport allows you to pick up your rental car, air-conditioned and, this being America, automatic rather than 'stick' drive, and head off in style for family fun at Disney World Resort with its four theme parks, SeaWorld or the Universal Orlando resort.

Arriving at Miami International Airport, the biggest airport for travel in South Florida, gives you the best option for trips to the Everglades or Miami's beaches. Tampa Airport on the Gulf Coast, rated the best US airport overall, has direct flights to and from London Gatwick as well as from Canada, Mexico and the Cayman Islands. Whichever of these or a number of other Florida airports you arrive at, Alamo will be there with one of the biggest and newest hire car fleets in the business, meaning choice and reliability for you.

Head for U.S. Route 1

At some point in your travels head for U.S. Route 1 (US 1). Generally a four-lane divided highway, it runs 541 miles (871 km) along the state's east coast, close to the Atlantic Ocean from Georgia in the north all the way to the Florida Keys in south Florida. Along this route lie those must-see venues like Daytona, Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

The southernmost section of US 1, about 100 miles long, runs over the water to the Florida Keys, an archipelago of about 1,700 islands. This is the Overseas Highway, originally built in the 1930s and running along a pair of two-lane concrete bridges. There are four-lane sections offering motorists the opportunity to pass slower moving vehicles. The Keys offers excellent fishing, snorkeling, exploring on glass-bottomed boats, sailing and biking.
